Residents of Kabul’s District 6 were jolted awake Thursday night by a powerful explosion, followed by the sound of jets overhead, as violence sharply escalated between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Pakistan launched airstrikes not only in Kabul but also in Paktia Province and Kandahar Province—the latter known as the birthplace and stronghold of the Taliban—after the Taliban government claimed it had carried out retaliatory ground operations against Pakistani military posts along the border. The Taliban said the offensive was in response to earlier Pakistani airstrikes on 21 February in Nangarhar and Paktika provinces, which the United Nations reported had killed 13 Afghan civilians, including women and children.
