The Donald Trump administration plans to admit up to 17,500 white South Africans, mainly Afrikaners, as refugees to the United States this year — including 10,000 more than originally planned.
The U.S. government says Afrikaners face discrimination and violence in South Africa, especially farmers. However, the South African government denies this, saying there is no evidence that white people are being targeted because of their race.
The refugee program could cost about $100 million and has increased tensions between Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
