Mexico has cancelled plans to end the school year early during the 2026 FIFA World Cup after parents complained it would disrupt children’s education and childcare arrangements.
Schools were originally set to close on 5 June because of the World Cup and expected heatwaves, but classes will now continue until 15 July.
President Claudia Sheinbaum said the early closure was only a proposal. The government also assured fans that security and construction work for the tournament will be ready in time despite recent cartel violence in the country.
