Two major wildfires in Georgia have burned over 34,000 acres and are threatening about 1,000 homes. The largest fires—Highway 82 Fire and Pinelands Road Fire—have destroyed dozens of homes and are still only partly contained.
Dry weather, strong winds, and severe drought are causing the fires to spread quickly. A state of emergency has been declared in 91 counties, and a burn ban is in place.
Firefighters and Federal Emergency Management Agency teams are working to control the fires, while schools have closed and some residents have evacuated. Despite the damage, no deaths have been reported.
